A Note from Jenn:

My original song, "Maiya," is about the recovery journey of my friend, Maiya. I first met Maiya and her mom, Sandra, through online eating disorder advocacy and felt deeply moved to write a song about Maiya herself that could also serve as a broader part of the recovery conversation. We then all met at the "MOM March Against Eating Disorders" in Washington, DC where we sealed the deal on our friendship and have continued to grow closer.

Maiya, thank you for your bravery, openness, and friendship. You are an incredible person and it is an honor to know you and be a part of your life. This song is my gift to you and a celebration of your spirit.

Sandra, thank you for coming into my life, being such a wonderful friend, and introducing me to your beautiful daughter.

lyrics

Maiya could take you underwater
She could open up a river-gate
Take you over the edge and cross a border

Where color hides when you are sleeping
Get a rebel to take you there
Show you out of the call of order and behind

If I don't know how to escape do I know you well
how to originate the order now

Maiya contains you when you're worried
When we're ready do we come clean
with porcelain and poison ivy

She sees to it that you are sleeping
Could put a wire in a white machine
and ease it into leaving this behind

If I don't know how to escape do I know you well
how to originate the ordinary girls
you say you were, say you were
You wanna have to

Go on by and satisfy your
character was just in spite
of the engines running, engines were they
open like your pentacles and
oh but Maiya said she mustn't play there
when the voices caught the better of her
but she could recall them like thunder

But since they won't exist like this calling
they won't exist like that matador
and they won't exist like a victory forgotten
and they won't exist like a warranted war

And they won't exist if my body goes sabbatical
they won't ignite in hope to abandon
and they won't exist in the power of another
where the voices were not able to

confuse her
with it's own devices
it watches every word but it won't be loving
cautioning on account of nothing
calls her on her indecency

and "show me a way to forget this"
say "show me the power to abandon"
all the embers of it, now to log these hours
I'm but ready to comply

But I see you've been leaning toward her
with a needle and an intention
Oh but you can go on venting to an opening
You captivate the ones that see you
Save you softly, softly say

Maiya compresses like a warlord
In the armory she contends
to go at it again just like the weather was

a combination of her seasons
She was inevitably undefined
and pandemonium was not behind

If I don't know how to escape do I know you well
how to originate the ordinary girls
you say you were, say you were
You wanna have to

Go on by and satisfy your
character was just in spite
of the engines running, engines were they
called down like your Renoirs
I got a big pendant calling out my
petty curse, I'll teach you how to
satisfy and suggest that the
voices were not able to confuse

But Maiya says she mustn't play there
when the voices caught the better of her
but she could recall them like thunder
